Homemade Vanilla Milk

June 28, 2016

We all have a list of comfort foods from our childhood that brings back memories of a carefree time. Tuna Fish Salad Sandwiches were among my favorites. But there is only one drink that brings me back to that time. Vanilla Milk is what it was called, and I couldn’t get enough of this stuff. It only takes 3 ingredients and I’m willing to bet you have those ingredients in your house right now. Give it a try, and you will be addicted at first sip!

What vanilla extract should I use?

I recommend a Madagascar Bourbon style vanilla extract like the one by Nielsen-Massey.  It’s pricer than your typical vanilla extract but you can taste the difference plus a little goes a long way.

Can Vanilla Milk be used as a coffee creamer?

Of course Vanilla Milk could be used as coffee creamer. Just double the ingredients and you’ll have a homemade coffee creamer ready to go for the whole week.

It sure can be served warm/heated. Just heat it up like you normally would for milk.

Make a simple syrup; 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water, bring to a boil for about a minute. Pour into a 1 quart mason jar. When cooled, add as much vanilla extract as you like. this is important, this is the vanilla flavor but it’s your choice as to how much vanilla you add to the simple syrup. Experiment. Refrigerate the final product, use when you make vanilla milk. Crazy good. Simple syrup is one part sugar and one part water.

I can’t wait to try this method of making a simple syrup ahead of time when making vanilla milk. I’m sure it has a much smoother consistency. Thanks for the suggestion Roger!

Granulated sugar will settle to the bottom of the glass as you are stirring dissolve it into the milk. You could try pouring the mixture into another glass and repeat this process a couple of times to ensure everything is fully combined .

For every gallon of milk add 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon 1 1/2 tablespoons of vanilla bean paste by Nielsen Massey or other high quality vanilla and 2 tablespoons of honey also high quality. Don’t forget to filter the vanilla milk through a cheese cloth after about 2 hours. Replace your regular coffee creamer with this. It’s delicious.

Oh my god!! I tried this and it was so good! I added a little less sugar because it was a little too sweet. But so delicious! Also, thanks for the tip with cinnamon!
